The London Road Safety Council has asked the relevant authorities to consider whether brake fluid had a part to play in the fire that followed the multi-vehicle crash on the M5 in November.
Concerns were raised by Councillor Maurice Groves, Chairman of the LRSC Executive Committee who said “ I, like many others, was appalled by the loss of life resulting from this fire and recalled that a number of car fires some years ago were put down to brake fluid and wondered if this could be linked. Modern Brake fluid has a higher spirit content than in the past as it now has to work at higher temperatures.”
The LRSC contacted the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA), the Royal society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and North Somerset Police to request that this question be taken into account as part of the investigation into this tragic event.
Background
